Hormone-Healthy Turmeric Granola Recipe

Granola is a beloved breakfast staple, and when crafted thoughtfully, it can be a powerhouse of nutrition. Today, we're diving into a unique granola recipe designed with hormone health in mind. This granola features turmeric, black pepper, coconut oil, coconut flakes, dried apricots, raisins, cinnamon, salt, oats, nuts, seeds, and honey (or a vegan alternative). These ingredients not only create a deliciously crunchy and satisfying meal but also support hormonal balance. Let’s explore how each component contributes to this goal before we dive into the recipe.

Why These Ingredients?

Turmeric & Black Pepper

Turmeric is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, largely due to its active compound, curcumin. Curcumin has been shown to help regulate hormones by reducing inflammation in the body. Black pepper enhances the bioavailability of curcumin, ensuring your body reaps the full benefits of turmeric.

Coconut Oil & Coconut Flakes

Coconut oil is rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which support metabolism and energy levels, important for overall hormone function. Coconut flakes add texture and a tropical flavour, along with healthy fats that nourish your endocrine system.

Dried Apricots & Raisins

These dried fruits provide natural sweetness and are rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Dried apricots, in particular, are a good source of potassium, which is essential for maintaining electrolyte balance and supporting adrenal health.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a potent spice known for its ability to regulate blood sugar levels, which is crucial for maintaining stable hormone levels. It also adds a warm, comforting flavor to the granola.

Oats

Oats are a whole grain that offers sustained energy and fibre, promoting digestive health. A healthy digestive system is key to efficient hormone regulation.

Nuts & Seeds

Nuts and seeds are excellent sources of healthy fats, protein, and minerals like zinc and magnesium, which are vital for hormone production and balance.

Honey (or Vegan Alternative)

Honey provides a natural sweetness and has antimicrobial properties. For a vegan option, you can substitute with maple syrup or agave nectar, which also contribute to the granola’s cohesiveness and flavour.

Hormone-Healthy Turmeric Granola Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rolled jumbo oats

  • 1/2 cup walnuts

  • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds

  • 1/4 cup chia seeds

  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds

  • 1/4 cup coconut flakes

  • 1/4 cup dried apricots, chopped

  • 1/4 cup raisins

  • 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted

  • 1/3 cup honey (or maple syrup/agave nectar for vegan option)

  • 1 tsp ground turmeric

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C. Line a large baking sheet with baking paper.

  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, all nuts and seeds, dried fruit, turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, and sea salt. Stir until evenly distributed.

  3. Add wet ingredients: In a small saucepan, melt the coconut oil over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in the honey (or vegan alternative) until well mixed.

  4. Combine: Pour the wet mixture over the dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly until all the dry ingredients are well coated.

  5. Spread and bake: Spread the mixture evenly on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure even baking. Reduce heat if browning too quickly. The granola should be golden brown and fragrant.

  6. Once baked: remove from the oven and immediately and let the granola cool completely on the baking sheet.

  7. Store: Transfer the cooled granola to an airtight container. It can be stored at room temperature for up to two weeks.
