Does nutrition really affect fertility?

Yes! Nutrition plays a crucial role in our overall health and well-being, and it is no different when it comes to fertility. The food we eat can have a significant impact on our reproductive health, and it is essential to understand the importance of proper nutrition for fertility.

Where do I start?

1. Balance - One of the most important aspects of nutrition for fertility is consuming a balanced diet that is nutrient dense. This includes a variety of deeply coloured fruits and vegetables, whole grains, proteins (both animal and plant based), and healthy fats. These foods provide the body with the necessary vitamins and minerals that are essential for reproductive health.

2. Folate - One nutrient that is particularly important for fertility is folate. Folate is a B vitamin that is essential for the development of a healthy foetus. It is recommended that women who are trying to conceive take a folate supplement, as it can help to prevent birth defects and promote a healthy pregnancy. You have have heard of folic acid which is the same nutrient however less bioavailable than folate by most women.

3. Iron - Another important nutrient for fertility is iron. Iron is essential for the production of healthy red blood cells, which are necessary for carrying oxygen throughout the body. Women who are deficient in iron may experience irregular menstrual cycles and may have difficulty conceiving. Please be carful with supplementation. Do not recommend unless you have been tested.

4. Omega-3 fatty acids help to regulate hormones and improve egg quality. These healthy fats can be found in fatty fish, such as salmon and tuna, as well as in nuts and seeds.

5. Water - It is also important to stay hydrated, as dehydration can have a negative impact on fertility. Drinking plenty of water can help to keep the body hydrated and promote healthy reproductive function.

What to avoid?

In addition to consuming a healthy diet, it is important to avoid certain foods and substances that can have a negative impact on fertility. This includes alcohol, excessive caffeine, too many trans fats and highly processed foods. These substances can disrupt the hormonal balance in the body and make it more difficult to conceive.

In conclusion, proper nutrition is essential for fertility. Consuming a balanced diet that is rich in nutrients, taking a pregnancy multi that contains folate and and avoiding certain foods and substances can all have a positive impact on reproductive health. By making healthy choices and taking care of our bodies, we can improve our chances of conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy.
